Background of FOCUS:

On 11 December,1998  the FOCUS was established under the umbrella  of  Barisal  Development Society  ( BDS ) -a  lead  NGO servicing in the southern parts of Bangladesh.  On June  14,   2000   Foundation  of  Credit Union  Services (FOCUS) was separated from BDS and officially established as an autonomous non-Government  organization basically to serve Credit Unions as network building organization in this region.

Although there is a League of Credit Unions is acting nationally in the country, but it is not completely fulfill needs & priorities of the southern Credit Unions basically for the following reasons :-

  1. Ecologically southern parts of the country are less developed in comparison with other parts of Bangladesh, similarly level of life-style and criteria for integral development of the Credit Union members logically defers from other parts.
  2. Most of the southern Credit Unions are registered from the Department of social service, where National League of Credit Unions itself is registered from Cooperative department and only servicing with the individual Credit Unions who are registered from the Department of Cooperative.
FOCUS is a non-government, non-political, non-sectarian voluntary organization with  a view to promoting  socio-economic condition of the rural poverty stricken people living in the  most  typical   backward  areas.  It's  mission is  to mobilizing local resources through awareness building, consciousness raising, economic support for increasing & purchasing capacity,  developing  literacy  &  numerical  rate,  promotion  of  mutual understanding between men and women in the family and  also ensuring women rights,  social  dignity, justice in the family as well as in the society among the operational areas.

Besides,  FOCUS aspires for  a society free from exploitation,  oppression and  starvation, where every individual in the society will get the rightful share of the resources and will reside in the society in peace and harmony with full human honour and dignity.

The  ultimate  purpose  for  formation  of  FOCUS  is  to building  up  strong  networking, need-based technical support and Rehabilitation & development service to  the  victims through its member  Credit Unions in this southern region.  The overall  objectives are to strengthen  and  support  for  development  of  the  member  Credit Unions with a better educational & financial services.

The specific objectives are: - 

  1. Promote interests of the member Credit Unions.
  2. Promotion of membership, share-savings & capital and arrange inter-lending service (micro-finance) by demand from the member CUs.
  3. Relief & rehabilitation programmes to the victims of natural disasters occurred frequently in the southern parts of Bangladesh.
  4. Providing need based services for the development and sustainability of the member CUs in the long run.
